I live and breathe social media. I have multiple Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn accounts hooked up to my phone and computers so that I can constantly see what is happening with my clients. I schedule posts, create content, generate ads and analyse results. However, my own businesses social media is lacking. Why you ask? Because, like many other businesses, I prioritise my clients constantly.
All successful businesses do this to some extent. This can range from missing lunch to ensure a client has content for a meeting, to working weekends so that a new deadline is met. For me, this means spending more time on social media campaigns, websites and designs for my clients, than for me.
This may sound ridiculous, and yes, this is an area that I can improve on. However, it is also one of the sole reasons that clients come to me in the first place – when you are so busy working with current customers, it is often hard to set aside time to focus on the ‘beast’ that is social media. If you need help or advice with your social media, that’s where I come in. Alternatively, if you want to tackle it on your own, check out my top tips below:
Top Tips for Social Media:
- Post 2-3 times per week on Facebook. Customers do not like repetitive content, and they do not need it thrown in their face every day of the week
- Know your audience – what is your audiences age, gender and location? When are they online? What are their interests? Use this information to target the right people
- Set the tone – pick a tone and stick with it. Not everyone is funny (humour can be hard to convey, especially in written text), not everyone appreciates slang, and not everyone will understand your references. Pick a tone that works for your audience and roll with it.
- Be consistent – there is no point in posting 2-3 times per week for three weeks, then disappearing for 3 months. Your audience will lose interest. Be at the front of their mind – you never know when they might think about your product or service.
- Make a plan – if you don’t have a plan you will scramble for content. Sit down at the start of the month, and write what you want to share. This might be articles, photos, events or general info about your company. Be organised and life will be much easier.
